Insurance fraud training for carriers, adjusters, agents and investigators

Utah compliance

Utah insurance fraud training

Since 2016, Utah has required every insurer to prepare, implement and maintain an insurance antifraud plan that includes educating employees on fraud detection and on the plan.

The requirement

What Utah requires

Utah Code 31A-31-112 requires every insurer to keep an insurance antifraud plan. Under subsection (2)(b), the plan must outline how the insurer will educate employees on fraud detection and on the insurance antifraud plan. Life settlement providers and producers have a similar training duty under 31A-36-117.

The plan must also include procedures to detect, investigate and prevent all forms of insurance fraud, to investigate through in-house or contracted investigators, to report suspected fraud to the Insurance Department and to pursue restitution.

Plans are not filed with the Insurance Department. The Department says Utah-domiciled insurers may be asked for their plan during a routine examination. The statute sets no training hours or frequency.

  • Educate employees on fraud detection and the antifraud plan
  • Keep procedures to detect, investigate, report and recover fraud losses
  • Have the plan ready for review at examination
